A Reflection of My Choreographic Process So Far

Darcey and I are working really well together and only have eight counts left to create for our solo. During the first few weeks of our practical lessons, I struggled to create phrases and we were both unsure on what choreographic techniques to use, especially since we had never previously worked together. However, over the next few lessons we slowly figured out how to choreograph expressive and fluid movements together. Generally, we recap the choreography that we had previously made and then discuss what types of movements we would like to add next. Then we start trialing different movements to follow on from the last movement made, stopping to discuss together to decide on what we like. We then trial the new phrase to see how it fits with the music. Sometimes this means that we have to adapt the speed of some movements or add another step in. After that we run the solo full out when there is enough space in the studio; this highlights that some movements do not flow well together and that they will need adapting or changing.

Yesterday, our teacher watched our solo and gave us some helpful feedback. We have developed a motif of breath through the upper body and our teacher would like to see us develop it further for it to ‘crumble’ at the end of our piece to go with our stimulus. We used walking at the start of our piece and our teacher would like to see it repeated as it is very distinct, which we planned to repeat anyway at the end. She would like to see it travel more/ more use of space, however, that may improve naturally if we had a larger space to practice or allowed to run it once by ourselves. We are going to add in the walks again and crumbling of breath at the end in the final counts next week. We plan to finish the piece and begin cleaning it.
